Product Option Description Metafields

What Is This?

These are custom text fields that enable you to add custom labels to options you've set on your products. Read more about product options and how they generate variants here.

How Do I Set This Up?

Create the Metafield

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Custom data.
2. Select Products.
3. Click Add definition.
4. In the Name field, enter "Option 1 Description", "Option 2 Description" or "Option 3 Description" depending on which option you're labeling. The Namespace and key field will automatically generate as "custom.option_1_description", "custom.option_2_description" or "custom.option_3_description", don't edit this.

5. Shopify limits you to 3 options, and they're completely custom to your needs. Popular options are "Size", "Color", "Material" and "Type". Depending on if the option you added is the 1st, 2nd or 3rd option you added for your product, tells you what you should be entering into the name field

6. Optional: In the Description field, enter a description for your metafield's values. We suggest "Describe/label your option"
7. Click Select content type, and then select Single Line Text.
8. Select One Value.
9. Click Save.

Supply Data for the Metafield

1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products
2. For every product, select it and scroll to the bottom of the page where you will see the metafield you added in the first set of instructions. Select that field and enter the description/label for your option. For instance, a good label for the option "Pack Size", is "Get a pack for yourself or stockup with a 16-pack for a party!"

Display the Metafield Data on your Site

This metafield will display on all sections that display a variant picker with the "button" style. There are two sections that enable you to display these featured icons: Main Product, Collection Teaser and Main List Collections.

There are many sections that enable you to display these option descriptions. Some of them allow you to display them by using Quick Add settings, while others allow you to display them by adding variant picker blocks. Follow the instructions for each below.

Enable By Quick Add Settings

Each of the sections below will have a setting called "Enable quick add", toggle it on. You'll find this setting in the primary section settings or in the settings of a "Product" block you can add to the section. If you've followed all of the instruction sets above, and you've supplied data and have variants for the product you're currently previewing, then you will see your Option Description(s) display.

Each of the sections below enable you to display this metafield using blocks. Follow the instructions for them below.

Instructions:

1. 1. 1. These section have a block called "Variant Picker". Once you've added or navigated to this section on your product page template, click "Add Block"
      2. Select "Variant Picker"
      3. Choose "buttons" as the layout
      4. If you've followed all of the instruction sets above, and you've supplied data for the product you're currently previewing, then you will see your Option Description(s) display
